Poor, poor Deadly Syndrome: last year they came out with one of the most impressive debuts, which is fun and melancholic and sad and spectacular. It’s definitley been a constant feature on my show (along with the song that you’ll hear at the end of this post) and I always return to it on my Zune. The arrangements do fit into that whole pop-rock feel, but The Deadly Syndrome take the music in interesting and diverse ways that never becomes redundant or boring or silly. They also have spectacular live shows: for awhile, one of my favorite YouTube videos was their drum circle at the song “Eucalyptus,” which is still freaking awesome. Seriouly, The Ortolan, was one of the best records of 2007, even garnering acclaim from AllMusic Guide, The Los Angelos TImes, and even the dubious Pitchfork Media; however, it flew under the radar, never coming up on the year end lists, and the copy at KCSU vanished for a time (we’ve since found it to bring them to you!).
They deserve way more attention and if college radio can’t deliver it, who can?
They’ve lately released the music video to the exceptional and upbeat and possibly catchiest track on the album, “Emily Paints.” Pitchfork.tv recently featured it and I’m sure you can find it on YouTube, but lucky for you, I’ve gone through the work to provide the link right there at the bottom of the post!
It’s not complicated or overly cool and stylish, and the most special effected feature is the lead singer being replicated a few times to sing the individual words of the chorus in his ruggedly handsome manner(though the guitarist is the cutest; and the drummer, but that’s because I have a thing for drummers), interjected with the band being embodiments of the literary (and reading is hot; especially more than Uggs or giant sunglasses or plastic surgery).
Mainly I love the song and the band and here it is, the Deadly Syndrome:
