There are few bands that I can proudly say I stalk to the point of a restraining order. Denver’s very own Hot IQs are one of those few bands. From the first time I saw them at Hodi’s Half Note, then known as the Starlight I was in love. Lead singer Eli is exactly the kind of guy I would want to be if I was a frontman. Bass player Bryan Feuchtinger has one of the best white fro’s known to man and I, like everybody else in a 50 mile radius, have a crush on the ever adorable and bubblegum chewing drummer Elaine Acosta.
Their first album, An Argument Between the Brain and the Feet was pry one of my first ever local albums that I purchased. Everything from their hit single “Firecracker” to the “Mascot is Winning” truly represents all that is good and fun about being a kid and just enjoying life. The second release, an EP entitled Dangling Modifier included a special cover of the song Web in Front by Archers of Loaf. Eli once told me that the Archers were his awakening band to the Indie music scene and felt that it was only proper to pay them tribute now that they had “made it.”
The big question of today now though is, what the Hell happened to the Hot IQs? Everyone was expecting a new album from them about 6 or 7 months ago. They have been playing a track here or there at all their shows and have been saying they are in the studio but no one really knew what was going on. That is until they announced a Video Release party for their first single off of the new album. The single is titled Houndstooth and if you have not heard it yet, it is so much fun. The show is December 19th at the Bluebird Theatre. The show includes the Chain Gang of 1974, Young Coyotes, and indie pop fun. But enough about me drooling over this band, I already do it enough. I think this video does a better job of anserwing many life long questions about the where and what of Hot IQs.
